Bananas & Communism
I will always associate bananas with Christmas and New Years. When I was a kid, bananas were a real scarcity all over the Eastern bloc - they only imported them during the winter, around the holidays, and there were long lines in the stores. Everyone was only allowed to buy 2 kgs. My dad always managed to find some for Christmas and my brother and I were so happy. We thought bananas were the best fruit on earth and dreamed about how great it would be to be able to buy them in the spring, and in the summer, and in the fall. We ate them slowly, spreading the 2 kgs over as long a period as possible.
Last night, I bought 4 pounds for $1.12 and almost wanted to cry. Now, both here and at home I can have all the bananas that I want, all year round, without waiting in any lines. It’s very literally a childhood dream come true. Yet, I would give anything to go back to the days when we only had them for Christmas.
I had a great childhood. I rationally know that communism was not good, that it was a corrupt and wrong system. But I was a kid and I was happy and never wanted anything more than we had. They say that childhood nostalgia is one of the signs that you are afraid of your future. Maybe. But the memories of these days help me get through today and as long as I have them, I will be OK.
