jaw crack

Filed under: Standard — at 9:31 am

I woke up cranky and sleepy this morning. I held on to my pillow for as long as I could, then I tried hiding under the blanket, pretended I did not know it was already 7, and then I had to get up. Really, I did not want to. Not at all. But I got up and it was a nice day outside, so I thought: “See, it’s not that bad.”

And then my jaw cracked. Just as I was sitting down at my desk, ready to read the newspaper and have coffee, the left half of my jaw made this horrible cracking noise. It was quite unpleasant, not too painful, but certainly not painless either. I have never had this happen before. What do you do if you are a generation Xer and you experience something unknown? You google it, of course. Shit, now my day was certainly not going to be good.

But when your search comes up with “I was kicked by a horse last November in the chin, and it fractured my jaw in six places…,” you just know that it can always get worse. Always. It’s not such a bad day after all.

Oh yeah, I am stressed. In case you were wondering.

Power of Procrastination

Filed under: Standard — at 5:19 pm

Jorge Cham (the guy behind phdcomics.com ) was on campus today and gave a great talk on the power of procrastination. “Procrastination is not laziness, it is a time-management philosophy.” I believe it.
It was illuminating to be in the same room with 300 other graduate students, none of whom I knew (except the poli sci folks I went with)(incorrect, come to think of it, there were 4 sociology folks across the room that I am friends with), but with all of whom I shared a sense of belonging to the same madness. Different fields, same madness - papers, advisors, more papers, deadlines, comps, dissertations, arrrgh! Everyone looked like a dork. It was kind of sad, but it was great. Jenn, Jonah, Lindsay and I could not stop laughing. Now, I guess I better read some capitalist brainwashing material about development and democracy.

P.S. The boy terrifique is super duper cool.
